Two 1/2" x 1/8" Basswood pieces make-up the mounting base for the servo hatch cover. These were epoxied between the ribs.

Make sure that you take into consideration to leave a small amount of space between the end of the aileron and the wing. Here I'm using a 1/8'" piece of scrape balsa for this purpose.

OK, lets start by finding and marking the exact center of the hinge center line, use your square for this step and mark with Sharpie. Next, take the awl and carefully place it on your bisecting lines (center) and make a small indentation into the wood.

It all starts with the layout of the five hinge points marked on the plans.

Next step, place short lengths of blue painters tape in the general locations on the wing, then using a fine tipped black Sharpie, transfer those locations onto the tape using a square.

Here are most of the tools that you will need to actually install the hinge points. Missing from the photo is an awl with a sharp point and a small flashlight. The tapered reamer on the table was not used, but you could if you wanted too.

You may as well position your aileron on the wing and transfer those locations onto the aileron. It's critical that the lines on the wing and those on the ailerons are lined up exactly.

OK, take note of the hinge point inserted into the hole that you just drilled. The end of the hing point is tapered and you will have to enlarge that part of the opening to fit the hinge point. Here's where you could accomplish this task with the hand tapered reamer, but I prefer to use a small tapered stone in my Dremel tool. It makes quick work of it.

Next, remove the bit from the jig making sure that you don't move the jig and place your second drill bit chucked into you hand drill and with confidence proceed to make your hole. Note the drill bit on my hand drill, I bought some drill stops which act as depth gages so I don't drill too deep. You can accomplish the same bu putting some painters tape on your bit.

Here's what it should look like with the tape removed.

Robart makes and sells a jig to help drill straight holes. It sort of makes your hand drill into a drill press...This tool is very inexpensive and worth purchasing. You will need two 1/8" sharp (read new) drill bits. Take your bit and now place it into the Robart jig and carefully move the jig until you feel the drill bit go into the indentation that you made with the awl.

It should look like this when done properly.

This is a photo of the small tapered stone filled on my Dremel tool.

Insert and sand away enough material to accommodate that taper on the hinge point.

2018/08/05 16:56:32
Now the hinge point fits correctly. It should be seated deep enough so the center of the steel hinge point is at the same level as the surface of the aileron.

After you enlarge the hole with the taped stone.

Time to focus our attention to the aileron now. The stock hinge point is too long so in my case I cut off a couple of the barbs.

2018/08/05 16:56:33
Stock length hinge point compared to shortened hinge point. Using the same method as before use your awl and make an indentation into the aileron and place the jig in position and drill the hole. Make sure to re-set the depth stop on you drill bit to prevent the bit from going too deep!

Once the hole is made you have to once again use the stone on your Dremel to allow for the taper in the hinge point. The next step is something that you didn't have to do on the wing side., and that is removing a bit of material to allow the knuckle of the hinge point to fit. This photo shows it already done.
